Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,
(Isaiah 55:2)
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?
I hate the answer to that question, for it forces me to face the reality of my own sinful nature. I am constantly battling my desire to satisfy my heart with things that cannot satisfy when, in fact, I know nothing within creation has the ability to satisfy what only the God of the universe can satisfy. Any and every attempt to do so will always prove to be futile. Only God’s presence in my life can satisfy what my heart truly desires.
So, yes, I hate the answer to the question. But I am not alone. It is true of every person who ever existed or will ever exist: I spend my time and resources on wasteful things because there is still a sinful, selfish desire inside of me that wants to be my own god.
How about you? (Haha … I already know the answer.) Reality stings sometimes, doesn’t it? So what do we do about it? How do we defeat our sinful desire to replace the living God? Well, here’s some more stinging reality: we can’t! At least not alone and not until we enter the Heavenly Jerusalem after Jesus’ return. We are all ‘works in progress’ and that work won’t be complete until we are in Heaven with our Lord, Jesus Christ. But there is one thing we can do while we are still here, one thing God actually directs us to do: PRAY! Pray for forgiveness and pray for help to repent. Won’t you join me?
Holy Father, Thank You for allowing me to be a part of Your creation one more day. And thank You for forgiving me for all the times I try to replace You. Lord, please help me to repent of this and all my sins.
In Jesus’s Name, Amen
